More information : [Area: SU 640624) Objects from Silchester of pre-Belgic date include: Two Neolithic flint implements - a polished axe and a flaked lance-head; A Late Bronze Age sword (at Stratfieldsaye House); A late Hallstat or La Tene glass bead; A La Tene I brooch. They indicate scattered settlement. All, except for the sword, are in Reading Museum. Context infers that all were found in the area of the Roman town. (1) The sword is a late type of LBA date, with slots instead of rivet-holes in the tang and shoulders. (2) No exact provenances are known for these objects other than their having been found in excavating the Roman town. The sword, as stated, is at Statfieldsaye House; the other finds are stored at Reading Museum. (3) No further information. (4) A decorated bronze leech brooch found at Silchester is in the possession of the Ashmolean Museum. (5)
