More information : [SU 65494522] Herriard Grange. [T.I.]. (1)
A charter of EDWARD I confirmed a charter of Richard de HERYERD, which in its turn confirmed the gift of Richard MAKERAL to the nuns of WINTNEY PRIORY [SU75NE5] of 1 1/2 virgates in SOUTHROPE. In 1428 the land held by the nuns in HERRIARD amounted to half a knight's fee. At the Dissolution the property was granted to Sir William PAULET and descended in the PAULET family until sold, 1851, to F.J.E. JERVOISE. `THE GRANGE' occupies the site of the grange which belonged to the nuns. (2)
HERRIARD GRANGE consists of farm buildings and two tenements. No work earlier than the 18th cent. survives and the tenants know of no tradition regarding the monastic grange. (3)
Herriard Grange House, L-shaped range of barns, and outstanding, all listed grade II. (4) |
