More information : SU 616012. Five R.N.A.D. Buildings at Priddy's Hard scheduled Nos. 431-436. No further information available. (1) In use by the Royal Armament Depot (restricted information - not published on OS maps). (2)
In the 1760s the Admiralty, prompted by concern about the proximity of gunpowder storage to the residential areas of Portsmouth, built a powder magazine at Priddy's Hard. A number of buildings including the Great Magazine survive. The Comber Basin was constructed between 1769 and 1773 to facilitate loading and unloading. The former magazine, shifting house and cooperage now house a museum of the history of ordnance. (3)
The bastioned earthworks at Priddy's Hard have been scheduled. This includes the ground beneath, and the earthworks surrounding, the magazine, but excludes the magazine building itself (Formerly Hants 434). The buildings formerly listed as Hants 430-433 and 435 have also been descheduled.
The defensive line that now survives comprises a rampart 6.0m high, 22m wide associated with 2 protruding bastions, a moat with an average width of 30.0m and depth of 4.5m and glacis slope. Scheduled: 20210. (4)
