ST PETER AND ST PAULS CHURCH

Founded by St Birinus as the Cathedral of West Saxons 634-675; minster 634-1140; cathedral of Mercian see late 9th century-1067, Augustinian monastery 1140-1539; subsequently parish church. Plan of aisled chancel, nave with South aisle, West tower and South porch. The chancel was rebuilt in 1340, and the South nave arcades in the early 14th century. The rest of the church is of 12th-14th century build. The 12th century tower was largely rebuilt in 1602. The church was restored by James Cranston circa 1845, William Butterfield 1846-53, and by George Gilbert Scott 1859-74.
