More information : [Area SU 4250 9762] Crop-marks seen from the air 800 yards, 120 from Woodhouse Farm, Fyfield, 3/4 of a mile S. of the village. The marks show a lane running between two small blocks of rectangular fields (?) among and near which are pits and small round enclosures. The ditches of some of the small enclosures cut the field boundary ditches. To the W. are two clusters of probable pits, near one of which are two small round enclosures. [Possibly connected with the Roman villa site (SU 49 NW 3) c. 400 m. to the S.S.W.] (1-2) The field is under crop and the marks cannot be traced on the ground. (3)
SU 423977 An extensive settlement complex, enclosures and trackways, N and S of the Frilford-Kingston Bagpuize road, stretching into Frilford parish. (4)
A large village of up to 30 round huts has been recognised from aerial photos; also field systems of probable Roman date. A drove way runs S towards the Ock. Some IA pottery from just W. of site. (5)
The extensive Iron Age and/or Roman settlement site described by the above authorities was mapped from aerial photographs taken between 1970 and 2009. The northern area of this complex site (centred at SU 4244 9767) consists of numerous probable hut circles visible as ring ditches, small rectilinear enclosures and dense pitting. Large rectilinear enclosures appear to enclose many of the features to the east. Multiple phases of site use are indicated by the numerous intercutting features.
Rectilinear enclosures of varying size and shape are visible continuing south of the A415 road. The features decrease in number and density and are visible stretching across the modern field to the east of Hamfield barn. Here the site of a Roman villa was excavated in 1884 (recorded in UID 234025). A further enclosed area of irregular rectilinear enclosures and pits are visible to the west of the villa (centred at SU 4220 9727) and are probably a field system associated with it (these were originally recorded in UID 234061).
Further enclosures can be seen extending southwards to a large trackway centred at SU 4255 9679. A long linear boundary ditch is visible parallel to the west of the trackway. (6-10)
