[T.I.] (1) The Guildhall, Abingdon, adjoins the Abbey gate-house on the south side and incorporates part of the chapel of St. John the Baptist (now the courtroom), which is said to have been founded c. 1117-1130 as a chapel to the hospital of St. John suppressed in 1538. It belonged to Abingdon Abbey. (2,3) The hospital buildings are first referred to as the Guildhall in 1563. The present front to the street has a 15th c. ground floor. Another part of the hospital was used for the grammar school founded 1562-3. The 15th c. features are visible on the ground floor of the S. front (See G.P. AO/63/63/8) where they are well preserved.
