More information : SU 4396 7157 Early Iron Age hearths and pottery sherds, including a decorated La Tene II cooking-pot, were excavated on the northern half of Boxford Common in 1931 and 1932. [AO/LP/63/62.] No signs of living floors or dwellings were found and further excavations to the east in 1934 revealed only pottery sherds. Peake suggests that this may have been a summer grazing ground. The pottery was classified at the British Museum by C. Hawkes. (1,2) Extensive gravel digging has included the area excavated in 1931-32 at SU 4401 7152 and probably that excavated in 1934. Gravel working has been discontinued and the pit is now overgrown. The following finds from Boxford Common are in Newbury Museum:- Five clay sling bullets (unaccessed); Five fragments of Hallstatt period ware (O.A.296); Fragment of ginger tip decorated ware (O.A.297), and a 'piece of fine ware' (O.A.317). All are in store and no details are available but it is probable that they came from the excavations. Also included, part of an I.A. 'A2' bowl (O.A.299). (3)
