St. Bartholomew's, a hosptial for the aged and sick was
founded prior to 1215. In Edward VI's reign the grammar school,
founded at Wormstall's Chantry prior to 1466, amalgamated with
the hospital. The only remains of these is the thirteenth
century Litten chapel now used for secular purposes, which is
scheduled. Near the chapel is an enclosure called the Litten
which was the hospital burial ground.

The Hospital is now represented by fourteen almshouses [SU 4692 6656] built 1618 (2) or 1698 (3). On the opposite side of Argyle Road is another block of almshouses called Raymonds built 1678 and now
known as St. Bartholomew's Close [see SU 46 NE 82] (7). (2-7)

"St. Bartholomews Close", referred to by Authority 7 is a
private house completely divorced from the almshouses.

The latter, now adapted for 12 almspeople, form a group of some
architectural interest, but the appearance is that of a building of c. 1698 and not 1618. See Ground Photo AO/63/206/6. The medieval chapel, now used for secular purposes, has been cut off at the
E. end for road widening and this end is now of brick. The N.
and S. sides are of flint and stone incorporating 13th c. and
15th c. windows. See Ground Photo AO/63/206/8. (8)

St Bartholomew's Hospital, Nos.1 to 27 Argyle Road. Reconstruction, c.1698, of c.1618 almshouses. Listed Building Grade II*. (9)
