More information : [centred SU 47885684] LADLE HILL [T.I.] HILL FORT [G.T.] (1) A probably unique example of an unfinished Iron Age 'A' hill-fort showing features which in a completed work would be concealed. A small bank and ditch or 'setting-out ditch' was constructed incorporating the earlier L.B.A. ranch boundary, SU 45 NE 25, on the north. Two gaps in this feature on the east and west presumably mark the positions of entrances. Sections of the main ditch were then cut leaving intermittent causeways. The top soil was carried back some 30-40 feet from the inner edge of the ditch and is still visible as irregular shaped mounds. The construction of the rampart was begun in several places using the more stable chalk. (2) Scheduled. (3) Resurveyed at 1/2500. (4) (SU 47885684) Ladle Hill (NAT) Fort (NR). (5) No change. 1:2500 Survey correct. (6)
