A stone bridge formerly led from MORPETH to the ABBEY of NEWMINSTER, the bridge was ruinous in JAN.1680 (1) Known as the "ABBEY BRIDGE", it crossed the WANSBECK about the site of the present [1832] wooden-bridge, which was built in 1807. (2) The site of the wooden bridge mentioned in T1(2) was not discovered during field investigation. Maps of MORPETH dated 1604, 1826 and 1852 do not extend for enough westwand to include the stretch of the RIVER WANSBECK to the north of NEWMINSTER ABBEY. (3) [Area centred NZ 19008612] "A stone bridge (which has been made into a County Bridge) was built within a very few yards of the site of what is here called the Abbey Bridge, not more than 3 or four years after the publication of this book.(b) The stone bridge mentioned above is the bridge now known as Lowford Bridge which was built in 1836.(a) Perambulation of the banks in the vicinity of Lowford Bridge revealed no trace of the Abbey Bridge mentioned in T.I.
