More information : "NZ 162705" Peel tower at High Callerton. (1)
NZ 16157049. The structure, at present being modernised, appears to be a bastle rather than the remains of a tower. See photograph. (2)
The bastle was shortly after it was sold by the Gofton family, circa 1600. In 1649 it was used as a secret hideout by Royalists, and gained the epithet, `Rebellion House'. Converted into a house in 1968. (3)
Built as a bastle in the 16th century and altered and extended in the early/mid 17th century. Two storeyed with thick stone walls and a Welsh slate roof. Restored in 1968. Cromwell is reputed to have stayed here. Listed Grade II. (4) |
