Summary : The abandoned remains of the medieval village of Ogle situated on the left bank of the Ogle Burn. The plan of the village is a type well known in this part of Northumberland in which two parallel lines of houses face onto a broad rectangular village green with narrow crofts to the rear. Ogle, although shrunken from its once larger medieval site, is still occupied and the basic medieval plan has been retained. The tofts in the northern half of the village have become totally abandoned and they survive as a series of prominent earthworks on the north side of the present village street. The earthworks are visible as a line of rectangular platforms or tofts, containing the foundations of timber long houses. To the rear of each toft there are the well defined remains of at least 12 linear crofts. Some of the crofts, particularly at the western end of the street, contain the remains of ridge and furrow cultivation. The north row of the village faces onto a broad rectangular open space which contains the remains of banks and hollows. This was formerly the village green. The green narrows at its western end to form a funnelled hollow way which turns southwards through the open fields and gave access to an area of common pasture. Much of the south row of the village remains in use and many of the medieval plots are occupied by modern houses. At the rear of these plots, however, the southern part of their associated linear crofts survive. Parts of the once more extensive open fields survive; to the north and south of the village there are several medieval furlongs or fields bounded by intact headlands. Each furlong contains ridge and furrow cultivation which survives well and stands to a maximum height of 0.6 metres. Scheduled. |

(1) (NZ 138 791) Village (L.B.) (Site). (2) Deserted Medieval Village at Ogle. (3) Condition unchanged. (4) The remains of the deserted medieval village of Ogle occupy c. 4ha of a field under permanent pasture to the N of the present village. They comprise a part of the street visible as a hollow way, 0.9m deep with, to the N of the street, four house platforms and a series of tofts. The house platforms, up to 0.5m high vary from 13m by 7m, the latter apparently sub-divided into four sections. Only one or two stones are visible. N and W of the tofts, bounded by banks up to 0.7m high, is well preserved broad rig cultivation. Immediately to the S of the modern village are further, somewhat amorphous earthworks which also appear to be medieval village earthworks from AP examination, with broad rig extending S from them. It seems likely therefore that much of the original village is buried under the present settlement. Surveyed on MSD. (5)
