(SU 45231628) Roman Villa Rawlence dug 2.5.25. (2)
Excavations in May 1925 at the site of a Ro villa discovered by Mr. E.A. Rawlence, about 1/2 mile east of Swaythling Church on the bank of the old canal, revealed wall foundations of Isle of Wight limestone, two broken square tiles with mortar on them - probably from pilae of a hypocaust, and fragments of Samian ware. The site appeared to have been systematically ransacked for its material. (Cf SU 41 NE 2, numerous Roman finds, which Crawford suggests may be associated with the site). (3)
The site is now under pasture on the outskirts of Southampton (Eastleigh) Airport. No further information gained concerning the discovery. (4)
HA 34 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (5) |
