More information : (Centred SU 4087 0207) Otterwood: Here stood one of the Granges of Beaulieu Abbey (Hants 81 NW 5), represented by a farm of the original name; there are no remains of the Grange. (1)
A grange and farm at Otterwood are repeatedly mentioned in the muniments. (2)
('A'-SU 4089208). The remains of a barn, of Quarr Stone, half of which has been converted into a two-storied cart-shed.
The extant remains comprise parts of the NE, SW & SE walls standing to a height of 2-3 metres, six buttresses, the foundations of the NW wall and of a seventh buttress.
None of the buttresses are bonded into the wall but, with the exception of the small one on the NE side, they appear to be contemporary with the walls: they have all been repaired with modern bricks. The original entrances appear to have been between the central buttresses of each of the long sides: there is a low square, stone platform outside the SW entrance.
('B' - SU 40840206). A pair of brick-built cottages - once the farmhouse according to the tenant-farmer - on Quarr Stone footings.
All the other buildings shown on OS 6" 1909 at this site have been completely destroyed. (3)
No change. (4)
At Otterwood, a grange of Beaulieu Abbey, the buttresses remain of what must have been a barn of considerable proportions. (5) |
