Summary : The site of a possible Roman small town at East Anton. The area was excavated prior to building development in 1970-2. The evidence suggested a fairly extensive settlement, occupied variously from 1st to 4th Centuries. |
More information : SU 371 474. The area at, and to the NW of, the Roman cross-roads (RR4b and RR43) was excavated ahead of building development in 1970-72. Considerable Romano-British finds were made (See Map diagram). The evidence suggests a fairly extensive settlement (succeeding a Belgic farmstead - SU 34 NE 38) occupied with fluctuating fortune from 1st-4th centuries (and erasing the actual cross-road early in its existence). Its siting accords very closely with that of the Ravenna Cosmography's "Leucomago" as deduced by Richmond and Crawford.
