Hob Uid: 226811
Location :
Hampshire
New Forest
Totton and Eling
Grid Ref : SU3700013600
Summary : A monastic site at Redbridge is mentioned in 686/7. It is more likely that the site was at Eling, which has all the traits of a minster.
More information : Abbey at Hreutford (Redbridge) c 686/7 AD (1)

In 686, Caedwalla, King of the West Saxons captured the last two aethlings of the kingdom of Wight near Stone. Cyneberht, abbot of the monastery of Hreutford (`Reed Ford', later Redbridge) interceded on their behalf, converting and baptising them before their execution the following morning.
It is argued that the monastery was at Eling, which is translated as the `aethling's land', rather than at Redbridge. (See SU31SE30). (2)
