Summary : The approximate site of Roman turret 8A, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. The site is postulated based on the discovery of pottery and 'occupation earth' only. There are no visible remains.
More information : NZ 1880 6596. Turret 8a. (GSC) (Site of) (T.I.) (1) This is situated 522 yards from milecastle 8, only pottery and occupation earth were found, the turret being completely covered by the road. (2) There are no visible remains. (3) The turret was `located' in 1928, 512 yards from milecastle 8 `below the modern south wall of the roadway in their normal positions' but these reports differ from authority 2 as to the location and neither agrees with the OS map position (4a-b). The measured position only has been drawn on the RCHME 1:1250 overlay at NZ 1880 6596; there is no surface trace of the turret on the side of the road.
