More information : NZ 1925 6580 Milecastle (G.S.) (Site of) (1)
The site of Milecastle 8, on a natural hillock, was examined in 1928. It yielded pottery and other relics, but all structural remains had been removed by stone-robbers. (2)
The site is completely covered by a dual carriage road. (3)
The milecastle was located in 1929 to a point 1627 yards (1488m) east of Milecastle 9 (4a), whereas Hope Dodds (4b) puts it 1602 yards (1465m) from Milecastle 9. The position given by the Ordnance Survey (1) is midway between these two points at NZ 1925 6580. The site is now buried beneath a dual carriageway road, and it is no longer possible to verify its precise position; the Ordnance Survey grid reference NZ 1925 6580 is within 15m of the measurements given by 4a and 4b.
