More information : ['A' - SU 29505034] ROMAN VILLA [G.S.] (Site of)
['B' SU 29575031] ROMAN FARM BUILDING [G.S.] (Site of) (1)
['A'] In 1830 Sir John Pollen excavated at the villa site and revealed a hypocaust, and some flooring of red and grey tesserae. Wall plaster, pottery and a coin of Constantine were found (2). In 1850, immediately south of the 1830 excavations, Sir John Boileau found an oblong, E-W, block (40' X 17') divided by cross walls, into two small rooms (13' wide) flanked by passages (6' wide). This block was paved with white & red tesserae (3).
'B' In 1899 the Rev. G. Engleheart excavated a detached farm building (probably a barn or cowshed) on the opposite side of the lane. It was a large structure, 141' x 52', with flint walls, 2' thick, and a double gateway, 11' wide, opening towards the villa. At each slate-roofed room, 16'6" long. A thick deposit of decayed wood occurred all over the building suggesting that it was largely timber-built. Sherds, a knife and coins of Tetricus, Claudius II & Carausius were found (2).
['C' - SU 29445025] A note from Engleheart's Papers, states that there are foundations here (5). I have discovered wall foundations and many roofing tiles beneath the surface of a field 100 yds. S. of the excavated portion (6). The ground plan of the whole series may well have resembled that at Clanville (2). Add. ref. (4). Finds in Winchester Museum (2). (1-6)
'A' This site appears to have been left open after excavation and is now covered by a small copse. A number of large flints (including perhaps the footings of a fragment of wall) and a few large pieces of Roman brick were seen on the surface; tesserae and stone tiles were also noted.
'B' 'C' No surface indications. Sites under pasture. (7)
No further information. (8)
