More information : [NZ 1584 4676] Site of [NAT] ROMAN RESERVOIR [R] (1) "At a short distance south-west of the camp (NZ 14 NE 4) is a circular depression, the site of a reservoir which was supplied by an aqueduct from the west". (2) The reservoir remains as an irregular circle approx 30.0m diameter 0.7m maximum depth, with no trace of internal walling or of aqueduct entrance (LIN 7). (3) As described by Authy 3. Published Survey (25") correct. (4) Air photographs. (5)
The depression at NZ 1584 4678 is now about 1.3m deep in a field of winter barley and has been spread by the plough. It is depicted as the terminus of the aqueduct on Hodgson's plan (a) but it is some 2 metres lower than the interior of the fort (NZ 14 NE 4); it seems probable therefore that the aqueduct entered the fort by either of the gates.
