More information : (SU 17368989) Roman Building (R) site of. (1) Several pavements of rough stone tesserae, not coloured, were found and destroyed when the railway was made to the west of Stanton Fitzwarren. Another pavement was found in the same field near the lake. (2) Four hundred yards south of the railway station where a cattle track runs under the line (SU 17329020) are patches of rough tessellated pavements with tesserae of large size, roughly one inch square of dark brown sandstone. Traces of rough foundations can be traced for about 200 yards. (3) SU 17359005 Trial excavation of a villa discovered in the 19th c revealed the caldarium, tapidarium, frigidarium cold plunge and stokehole of a small bathouse built of coral rag. Constructed early in the 3rd c the building was demolished c360 AD and the cold plunge used as a rubbish pit. Occupation of the site continued to at least the end of the 4th c. Finds from the site are in Swindon Museum. (4)
