Summary : Linear earthwork, comprising for a substantial part of its course a ditch or hollow way between two banks. Its precise relationship with immediately adjacent areas of "Celtic" fields is currently unclear, though it is presumed to be of later Prehistoric or Roman date. It has been identified as the "dyke south of Aethelferth's stone" mentioned in a charter of AD 939. |

A ditch mentioned in a charter of AD 939 as the "dyke south of Aethelferth's stone". Its course west of SU 12187121 was recorded by Colt Hoare and confirmed by Crawford. Bounding 'Celtic' fields, it divides into two at the Iron Age/Romano British settlement (SU 17 SW 102) and three short tracks branch from it on Totterdown. It may have been a Bronze Age ranch boundary but a developed track system in the Romano-British period seems likely. (2-6)
The ditch is extant from SU 12207120 to SU 13377172 with the exception of a 200 m length at SU 126714. It has many of the characteristics of a ranch boundary, but has clearly been utilized in the system of trackways associated with the 'Celtic' field system to the south. Revised/Resurveyed at 1:2500. This linear feature was mapped at 1:10,000 from APs by the Fyfield Down and Overton Down Mapping Project. It follows the W-E ridge on the N part of Avebury Down at least as far as Totterdown Wood (SU 11307105 to SU 13437180). Its course within the wood has not been recorded, but it is presumed to link with the trackway which runs SE along the ridge between Fyfield Down and Manton Down (SU 13747180 to SU 14587105). Most of its W part (SU 12077118 to SU 13437180) comprises a deep track or hollow way between two banks. The portion of this feature immediately to the W of Totterdown Wood (SU 12697143 to SO 13437180) is traditionally taken as the northernmost limit of the Totterdown and Fyfield Down field systems (SU 17 SW 26), but the AP survey has recorded slight traces of field banks on its N side. Scheduled, National Number 33951. (12)
Additional banks elements are visible on lidar and were mapped as part of the Avebury WHS Lidar and NMP Review. (13) |
