Summary : Two possible field clearance cairns identified within a field system. Their location corresponds with a field bank within an extensive field system (SU 17 SW 26 & 104). One of the possible cairns was originally described as having a huge upright sarsen on it, though this no longer appears to be present.
More information : (Centred SU 12857085) Two small mounds; the S one has a huge upright sarsen on it. (1) Area SU 12857085; These are probably two of several small field clearance heaps within a celtic field system. Not specifically identified, and the 'huge sarsen' evidently removed. (2) This area was mapped at 1:10,000 from APs by the Fyfield Down and Overton Down Mapping Project. The location described above corresponds with a field bank within an extensive field system SU 17 SW 26; no clearance cairns were recorded by the AP survey. (3) The field system bank at this location has a segmented appearance, having been cut by a series of medieval or post-medieval tracks or droveways (part of SU 17 SW 95).
