Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 221568

Hob Uid: 221568
Location :
Wiltshire
Winterbourne Bassett
Grid Ref : SU1250074560
Summary : Earthwork remains of two contiguous rectilinear enclosures, the southern one has a possible building platform visible in the interior. Finds including possible Roman tile; Roman, Bronze Age and Medieval pottery have been recovered from the area. The artefacts are in Devizes Museum. The enclosures are visible on aerial photographs.
More information : (SU 12507456) Earthworks (NR) (1)

Undated oblong enclosure bisected by cross ditch; area 1 1/2 acres. (2)

Similar in plan and position to a Romano-British embanked cemetery at Comiton, Berkshire (SU 58 SW7). (3)

Much RB pottery (in area and to SW). (4)

Two contiguous enclosures on a valley floor. The north one is defined by a single bank up to 0.4m high with a shallow outer ditch. Breaks in the NE and SW sides may be modern, and within the E corner, a rectangular platform 12m NW-SW by 5m, is possibly the site of a building. Although the interior is much disturbed by cattle, no dateable material was seen. There is no trace of the more southerly enclosures and a low amorphous ground swelling at SU 12517453 is all that remains of its internal feature.
Published survey 25" revised. (5)

Nothing visible on available air photographs. (6)

Two adjoining enclosures, as described above. Scheduled WILTS 896.
Visited 6.6.76. (7)

Finds recovered from the enclosure centred at SU 125747 include Middle & Late Bronze Age, Roman and Medieval pottery, and tile fragments. These can be found in the Owen Meyrick collection at Devizes Museum. (8)

The enclosures were recorded when the area was mapped at 1:10,000 from air photographs. Faint traces of the earthworks were visible on photographs taken in 1997. The enclosures may be associated with lynchets which follow the contours of the steep W facing slope (SU 17 SW 167). (9-11)
