More information : (SU 13587581) Tumuli (NR). (Site of). (NAT). (1) Crawford states that the two bowl barrows were in the southern-most plantation, SU 13077505, where two vague bumps can still be seen. The authority for the position on OS 6" 1925 was Smith (3) who describes them as two indistinct flat barrows in a circular plantation. (2-3) The two barrows alleged to be situated within the southern most plantation on Hackpen Hill (authority 2) were not positively identified. A flat-topped mound, 8.0m in diameter by 0.6m high is visible at SU 13047503. But at SU 13057504 and SU 13057506 are two similar tree-covered mounds each 5.0m in diameter and 0.3m high. Which of these three features were noted by Crawford as bowl barrows cannot be determined. The plantation has been formed on an area of early gravel diggings and the disturbed nature of the ground makes an accurate assessment of the mounds difficult. No remains were visible within the northernmost plantation (centred SU 13587581) at the position published on the OS 25" (1925). Mounds surveyed at 1:2500 on AM. (4)
