More information : (SU 19276882) Site of (NAT) St Margaret's Priory (NR) (Gilbertine) (NAT) (1) A small priory of probably not more than 5 or 6 Gilbertine Canons (2) dedicated to St Margaret (3) was founded - 1199-1200 and dissolved in 1539 (2).
The priory was situated 200 yds south of the town, on the south bank of the Kennet, to the west of the road (4) where a disused C16th dwelling house now stands (5). Excavations, immediately north of the disused house towards the old George Inn, revealed skeletons and tiles assigned by J Ward Perkins, to the C13th - C14th. Skeletons have been found east of the Salisbury road and towards the town as far as the Wiltshire War Memorial; also at the junction of the Bath Road and George Lane. The area seems too extensive to be the private cemetery of the Order (6). (2-6) The C16th house which stood on the site of the priory was demolished several years ago and a new building erected a few yards to the west. F G H Kempson says that his study of Medieval records suggests that the OS siting is most probably correct. (7) |
