Monument Number 219974 |
Hob Uid: 219974 | |
Location : Wiltshire Winterbourne Stoke
|
Grid Ref : SU1035044190 |
Summary : A possible round barrow recorded from an air photograph. There are no traces of a barrow on the ground at the location recorded, and its identification on aerial photographs is somewhat uncertain. The photographic source of the original record could not be identified by later surveys, although other photographs show an indistinct circular cropmark, and possibly as a very slight earthwork, at this location. That mark could represent either a barrow, or a natural mound or recent feature. It is also possible that the original record is a mis-sited duplicate of SU 14 SW 296 (Winterbourne Monkton 46). |
More information : SU 10354421. A possible barrow circle is visible on APs. (1) There are no indications of a barrow on the ground. (OS APs not available at present). (2)
The possible barrow falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project, but its identification is somewhat uncertain. The photographic source of the original record (see authority 1) could not be identified by either survey, although other photographs show an indistinct circular feature as a cropmark, and possibly as a very slight earthwork, at this location. That feature has been mapped by both surveys, although it could represent the remains of a barrow, or it could be a natural mound or a recent feature. (4-5) |
