Barrow cemetery comprising of six barrows (Amesbury 43-48), including a twin bell barrow, Amesbury 44 (SU 14 SW 426) and two confluent bell barrows Amesbury 46 (SU 14 SW 428) and Amesbury 47 (SU 14 SW 429). (2). Excavations have located cremations, often accompanied by grave goods, and one intrusive inhumation within five of the barrows. The other barrow, Amesbury 43 (SU 14 SW 425) was opened in 1722 without any details known. (3)
The barrows are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, and have been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (4-6)
The six round barrows of Amesbury 43 to Amesbury 48 referred to above (1-6) are now recorded as part of the Cursus barrow cemetery (Monument Number 219681). (7-8) |
