CUCKOO STONE

DESCRIPTION + /

The Cuckoo Stone is a now recumbent sarsen stone which measures 7 ft x 5 ft x 2 ft. Excavations in 2007 suggest that it was stood upright at some point before 2000BC, slightly west of its current location. It replaced a wooden pole that stood in a hole cut into the solution hollow that had formed naturally beneath the stone. The Cuckoo Stone has provided a focus for later pits and burials and a perhaps a Roman shrine.
