Historic England Research Records

Amesbury 48a (Grinsell)

Hob Uid: 219507
Location :
Wiltshire
Amesbury
Grid Ref : SU1165042650
Summary : A possible Bronze Age bowl barrow 30 paces (c 90 feet) in diameter; part of the Cursus barrow cemetery (Monument Number 219681). It was discovered by R S Newell and Grinsell confirmed it (Amesbury 48a) was visible on an aerial photograph, presumably as a crop mark as nothing is visible on the ground at the recorded location. No photograph reference was quoted nor any feature recorded at this location by English Heritage's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project or Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project. This record may be duplicated by Amesbury 115 (Monument Number 1119671), a nearby causewayed ring ditch, although the marks observed could be 20th century cultivation marks.
More information : SU 11664265. Listed as Amesbury 48a; a bowl barrow 30 paces (circa 90 ft) in diameter found by R.S Newell. (1)

There are no visible remains of a barrow in this area. (2)

This location falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. The presence of a barrow was not confirmed by either survey. (4)

This area was surveyed in April 2009 as part of the Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project but no earthworks relating to the monument referred to above (1-4) were recorded. No photographic reference was quoted by Grinsell (see source 1) and it is possible that the site was duplicated as Amesbury 115 by the RCHME (Monument Number 1119671) , and that the marks observed are 20th-century cultivation marks.
