Summary : Earthwork enclosure at Clarendon Palace enclosing an area of 16.6 hectares. It comprises of a bank and outer ditch and pre-dates the palace perimeter wall and therefore could be to be a park pale associated with the 11th century or earlier hunting lodge. However, it has been suggested by Musty, on the basis of its situation, to be an Iron Age oppidum, but this is not supported by any dating evidence. A small V-shaped ditch was recorded during the 1930s excavations of the palace, beneath the 13th century buildings. It was thought to be prehistoric in date by the excavators, but again no dating evidence was present. Ditches were also located beneath the Salsary and kiln of the palace. |
More information : (SU 181 305) Ditch (NR) (1) A bank and ditch enclosing about 40 acres, within which, in one corner Clarendon Palace (SU 13 SE 38) is situated, the ditch running inside the Palace perimeter wall. Sectioned by Musty in 1961, the ditch was found to be approximately 8ft deep x 20ft wide at the lip. The only stratified finds were late 13th c pottery and a 13th or 15th c. arrowhead. These were at the top of the ditch silt, and are an indication that the earthwork is a very early medieval, or pre-medieval, feature. (2) The bank and ditch is for the most part well defined, and is probably a park pale possibly associated with the Norman hunting Lodge at Clarendon Palace (SU 13 SE 38) Published Survey 25" revised.
