More information : (Centred SU 1182 3928) Tumuli (NR) (SU 1180 3915) Tumulus (NR). (1) A number of bowl, disc and pond barrows forming a group on Lake Down:- Graphic material ommitted. (2) A,bowl, 14m in diameter, 1.5m high. B,bowl, 10m in diameter, 0.7m high. C,ditched bowl, overall diameter 33m, mound 2.1m high, ditch 0.3m deep. D,pond, overall diameter 18.5m., bank 0.3m high, central depression 0.7m deep. E,pond, overall diameter 26m, bank 0.4m high, central depression 1.2m deep. F,pond, overall diameter 19m, bank 0.2m high, central depression 0.5m deep. The bank of this barrow is partially overlaid by that of 'E'. G,pond, overall diameter 23.5m.,bank 0.4m high, central depression 1.1m deep. H,a flattened bowl barrow, 20m in diameter, 0.9m high. J,a disc barrow with an overall diameter of 54m. K,a mound 13m in diameter with the appearance of a miniature bell barrow though it seems that the capping mound was not in existence when seen by Grinsell, as the height he gives, 2 1/2 ft or approx 0.75m., is 0.4m. lower than the present height. Evans noted the following as coming from the Lake Barrows:- stone axe, barbed and tanged arrowhead, remains of a necklace with gold studs; an awl; bronze dagger; chisel; whetstones associated with bronze daggers, and a possible pair of earrings. (4,5)
The Bronze Age barrow cemetery has been mapped from aerial photographs. The cemetery has been extensively photographed and a selection of illustrative shots has been listed in the references.
