More information : (Name SU 197287) Clarendon Park (NAT) (1) Clarendon Park (centred SU 187302), a deer park situated within the bounds of the Royal Forest of Clarendon or Penchet, was enclosed with a wooden paling sometime between 1223 (2) and 1228 (3). In 1650 the bounds of the park pale corresponded with those of the present civil parish of Clarendon Park The attached plan confirms this, except on the south-western boundary where it follows the A36 road between (SU 163291 and SU 173281). Andrews and Dury (4) confirm this and show further deviations from the present parish boundary between (SU 18302776 - SU 18702791 and SU 20853020 - SU 20563137). By this time the pale was broken down and in 1664 Clarendon was disparked. (2-4)
The park pale encloses an area centred at SU 187302, extending from SU 170316 to SU 204320 and SU 162294 to SU 210290, this follows the boundaries defined within authority 4. This boundary was previously thought to define the Medieval Hunting forest of Clarendon, but in 1327 the western boundary of the forest was the River Bourne. This earthwork was the 1650 boundary. The area was disparked in 1664. (5)
The Royal Forest was deafforested in the reign of Henry II. (6) Additional references. (6-9) |
