Summary : Augustinian Priory founded 1128-33, dissolved 1536, cloisters and stone coffins located during excavation. For the latter see SU11NE5. A survey of the earthworks at the site confirm the general Augustinian layout.
More information : (SU 16271785) Site of Priory (GT) (1) Augustine Priory at Breamore founded 1128-33 and dissolved 1536. (2) Priory of St. Michael's, Breamore. (3) Nothing remains of the priory and excavations made on the site in Priory Meadow in 1898 revealed only traces of the cloister and some stone coffins. (4) The site of the priory is indicated at SU 16271785 by a number of irregularities in the ground and a scatter of building material in mole hills. A short distance to the east at SU 16321788 are three stone coffins oriented east-west which suggests that they are in situ, probably in the Canon's burial ground. Founded c AD 1130) [NAT] (Centred SU 16321787) Stone Coffins [NAT] (3 shown) (6) No change Published 1/2500 correct. (7) No change. 1:2500 Survey correct. (8) Surveyed by the Avon Valley Archaeological Society in 1984 which disclosed the priory to be of typical Augustinian plan. See Illustration Card. (9)
