Summary : Reference in Domesday to a medieval village of Easby. The 'by' element of the name Easby refers to a Scandinavian farmstead. Given that St Agatha's church predates the adjacent Abbey and contains a piece of 9th century carving, the environs of the church seems a plausible location for the documented settlement. The 27 families taxed in the village in 1301 are likely to have been dispersed throughout the vill. (3) |
