Summary : A Bronze Age bowl barrow, listed by Grinsell as Avebury 48, and located circa 800 metres south east of Windmill Hill. During the 1920s there were reported to be a number of stone boulders or slabs associated with this mound. A ditch surrounding the west side of the barrow is also visible as a cropmark. A second mound, again described as a bowl barrow, is reported nearby and is visible as a cropmark on air photographs.
More information : (SU 09477092) Tumulus (NR) (site of). (1) Avebury 48; a bowl barrow 30 paces in diameter by 2 1/2ft high. On arable. (2) "Visited April 1925. Many fragments of Oolithic Slats (sic ? slabs) lying about on mound. Signs of another possible mound to south of it". (No sign of this on available air photographs (RAF 1950). (3) SU 09477092. A bowl barrow, 40.0m in diameter and up to 0.9m high. Under plough. (No trace of the oolithic "slabs"). SU 09477084. This mound which is 28.0m in diameter and 0.4m high is almost certainly a ploughed down bowl barrow. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4) A surrounding ditch is visible as a cropmark on the western side of the Bronze Age bowl barrow at SU 0947 7097. The mound of the barrow at SU 0947 7084 was also visible as a cropmark. (5) The mound of the northern-most barrow is visible on lidar and was mapped as part of the Avebury WHS Lidar and NMP review. (6)
