Summary : Dominican Friary, founded in 1245, but the friars were transferred to Salisbury in 1281. Some however remained, since there was a small church, cloister and lodging there in 1538. It was probably a vicarial house from 1281. |
More information : A house of Dominican Friars was founded at Wilton in 1245. It stood in what is now West Street (SU 095313) but no trace remains. Friars Mead, attached to their church, stretched towards Isembard's millrace (Isembard's Mill is sited at SU 0950 3114 on map in 2. There is no suggestion in the VCH that St Andrew's Church ((SU 03 SE 2) was other than a separate foundation). In 1281 the convent had moved to Salisbury and the Wilton house became a cell. Both were dissolved in 1538. The cell then consisted of a church 34 ft by 14 ft, a cloister of 24 ft and a lodging 16 ft by 12 ft. (1,2) |
