Hob Uid: 213018
Location :
Dorset
Woodlands
Grid Ref : SU0212009600
Summary : Part of an extensive group of round barrows, situated south and south west of the South Circle, recorded from field survey and aerial photographs.
More information : (Centred SU 02040952) Tumuli (NR)
(SU 02100969) Tumulus (NR)
(SU 02320966) Tumulus (NR) (1)

Barrows (29-38) lie S. and S.W. of the South Circle on both sides of
the Cranborne-Wimborne road. One of them, when partly levelled,
appears to have yielded four skeletons (G.A. Cooke, Topographical
Description of Dorset (c. 1818), 151).

(29) Bowl (02020948); diam. 90 ft., ht. 2 ft.
(30) Barrow (02120953), levelled by ploughing; diam. about 55 ft.
(31) Barrow (02140955), levelled by ploughing; diam. about 60 ft
(32) Bowl (02060957); diam. 90 ft., ht. 2 ft.
(33) Barrow (02200961), levelled by ploughing; diam. about 70 ft.
(34) Bowl (02100969); diam. 100 ft., ht. 4 ft.
(35) Barrow (02250968), levelled by ploughing; diam. about 65 ft.
(36) Bowl (02320966), in which an intrusive skeleton was found near
the surface (T. D. Reed, The Rise of Wessex (1947), 286). Diam.
100 ft., ht. 10 ft.
(37) Barrow (02340973), levelled by ploughing; diam. about 50 ft.
(38) Barrow (02400978), levelled by ploughing; diam. about 50 ft.

A rapid examination of air photography (4-7) suggests the presence of at least nine other possible round barrows, of Prehistoric or Roman date, visible as relatively small ring ditch cropmarks at:
SU 0208 0946
SU 0212 0949
SU 0211 0949
SU 0208 0950
SU 0213 0950
SU 0209 0952
SU 0213 0952
SU 0214 0962
SU 0217 0966

The round barrows described by authorities 1-2 are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, and have been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. Aerial photographic evidence allowed the dimensions and locations of most of the barrows to be recorded more accurately than in authority 2, and provided additional information for some of the barrows:
(29) SU 0202 0948 appears to show traces of a central feature, either mound material or a possible scoop or hollow, surrounded by a circular ditch. The ditch is 38m in diameter; the central feature is 17.4 m in diameter.
(30) SU 0211 0954; defined by a slight circular ditch 17.5m in diameter.
(31) SU 0213 0955; defined by a broad circular ditch 20.7m in diameter.
(32) SU 0206 0957; appears to show traces of a central feature, either mound material or a possible scoop or hollow, surrounded by a circular ditch. The ditch is 34m in diameter; the central feature is 15 m in diameter. An area of disturbance, possibly due to small-scale quarrying, affects the southwestern quarter of the ditch.
(33) SU 0220 0962; defined by three circular ditches. The outer ditch is 28m in diameter, the middle is 17m in diameter, and the inner ditch is 10m in diameter.
(34) SU 0209 0968; show traces of a central feature, either mound material or a possible scoop or hollow, surrounded by a circular ditch. The central feature is 19m in diameter; the ditch is 37m in diameter.
(35) SU 0225 0968; defined by a circular ditch 25.3m in diameter, partly cut by the Cranborne-Wimborne road.
(36) SU 0232 0966; visible as a slightly oval earthwork mound 22m x 18m, surrounded by a broad circular ditch 27.7m in diameter.
(37) SU 0234 0972; defined by a circular ditch 24.3m in diameter.
(38) SU 0210 0976; defined by a circular ditch 19m in diameter. A small pit is visible within the barrow, near the eastern side.

The small barrows described by authority 3, and several additional similar barrows, have been recorded separately (SU 00 NW 80). (8)
