DESCRIPTION

A gabled Roman inscribed tombstone was found on Nesley Farm probably in 1846, and another nearby was left in situ. The former is in Corinium Museum.

A Roman gabled tombstone measuring 20 by 30 inches (1) was
found on Nesley Farm, ST 853924, probably in 1846. It was in the
middle of a small enclosure or field bounded on two sides by ancient
stone walls, and traditionally a cattle pen. On it was inscribed
"DM METTI N ATION GETA VIXIT ANN XXXV HP (2), translated "To the
spirits of the departed (and) of Mettus, a Getan by tribe (who)
lived 35 years. His heir set (this) up." The tombstone is now in
Corinium Museum (1). Another stone, close by, was not removed (2).
