More information : [Area: ST 89854605] A large number of pits and post-holes, north of Battlesbury Camp, was revealed in 1956, in making a road on W.D. property. They extended over a distance of several hundred yards to a width of c. 50 feet, and tests indicated that they extended beyond this and formed a substantial settlement. A representative pit and post-hole were excavated for the Ministry of Works and IA' AI' and IA' AB' potsherds found in and about them. The site is clearly related to the camp and neighbouring lynchets. Representative sherds are in Salisbury and Devizes Museums. (1-2) The plan (1) shows the post holes to have extended along the section of the military road from ST 89824573 to ST 89944627. Although it seems very probable that this settlement is associated with the hillfort, (ST 84 NE 4), the strip lynchets to the east are still being cultivated and appear at least Post Roman if not Medieval.
