MILECASTLE 20

DESCRIPTION + /

The possible site of Roman milecastle 20, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. A depiction from the James Irwin Coates Archive (a condition survey of Hadrian's Wall undertaken in the 19th century and including illustrations), shows a view from the Military Road to the entrance to Halton Shields Farm dated 1879. Within the road surface are shown several large stone blocks, two of which appear to be pivot stones from the milecastle gateway, together with threshold blocks. The field wall appears to be built of reused Roman stone.
