More information : (NZ 0481 6836) Milecastle 18 (GSC) (Site of) (T.I.) (1)
Milecastle 18 is about a furlong west of the Robin Hood Inn, where a road turns south to a farmhouse. It was found in 1931 to measure 53 feet 8 inches from east to west, by 59 feet 6 inches from north to south, and its sidewalls are 7 feet 9 inches thick. Its gates are of type I (viz. both the piers and the passage-walls are composed of large masonry.) (2)
Excavations in 1931 revealed a milecastle of the long-axis type, largely robbed except where covered by the road. (There is no plan showing relationship to nearby detail. Outline apparently plotted from measurements given in this and other articles using OS siting symbol at datum.) (3)
Surveyed at 1/2500. There are no structural remains at milecastle 18 though its western side is visible as an earthen platform 0.5m high. The remainder has been obliterated by a track and an arable field. (4)
There is no visible trace of the milecastle. (5)
