Summary : A natural fissure in the rock in the extreme south west corner of Lime Kiln Hill Quarry (then Whatley Quarry) was found on July 10th during blasting. The fissure contained bones of mammoth and other animals, plus some flints. A small handaxe and other animal remains were discovered subsequently in another cave and/or fissure(s) in the same quarry. The fissure discovered in 1951 was later destroyed by blasting. |
More information : Lime Kiln Hill Quarry, Mells. ST 73154863. A natural fissure in the rock in the extreme SW corner of the quarry contains a fill with Late Pleistocene animal bones, including an exceptionally large form of Ursus speleus. Man is indicated by the nature of the deposit, flecks of charcoal and pieces of flint. (1) Similar information. (2) ST 730482: A natural fissure containing bones of mamouth and other animals was found on July 10th 1951 during blasting at Whatley Quarry Finds were presented to Bristol University. The cave was later destroyed by blasting. (3) Small mousterian cordiform axe found in a large cave at Lime Kiln Hill Quarry. A similar site in the same quarry (see sources 1-3) has yielded mamouth tooth and possible tusk fragments. Two fissures discovered recently contained further animal remains (4)
