Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 19973

Hob Uid: 19973
Location :
County Durham
Rokeby
Grid Ref : NZ0873014300
Summary : Site of the deserted medieval village and chapel of Mortham. The settlement was mentioned in Domesday, but was destroyed by the Scots in 1346 and never rebuilt. The remains were demolished by Sir Thomas Robinson in the late 18th century. Earthworks, including traces of ridge and furrow, are visible on aerial photographs.
More information : Mortham, mentioned in Domesday was, in 1318, completely relieved of its tax because of damage done by the Scots (1). The hamlet and church appear to have been destroyed by the Scots in 1346 and never rebuilt (3a) and in 1428 it was reported that the parish had been empty since the raids (1b). According to Hodgson both Rokeby and Mortham - "if it ever existed" - together with "the little church" (St Michael's NZ 01 SE 3?) "were wholly swept away by Sir Thomas Robinson, in the latter part of the eighteenth century". The site of the chapel of Mortham is lost, although some of the gravestones are built into two buttresses of Mortham Tower (1).

(Centred NZ 08731429). Remains of banks and ground disturbance with rig and furrow on three sides, are visible on AP (4). (1-4)
