Summary : A well located among the earthwork ramparts of Cadbury Castle. First mentioned in circa 1726, the shell moulding on the stone hood suggest a date no earlier than the early 18th century. It has been referred to by several names since 1726, and there appears to be some confusion with King Arthur's Well (ST 62 NW 3). |
More information : [ST 62722532] Queen Anne's Wishing Well. (1) The well is noted by Collinson but without comment. Home could find no tradition for its use for medicinal purposes and suggests that it was originally called St. Anne's Well. (2-3) This well is a shallow trough set into the ground with a stone hood. The hood has shell moulding which suggests an early 18th c date (see photograph). (4)
Queen Anne's Wishing Well is located at the base of the third rampart of the northern defences of Cadbury Castle (5). Collinson (2) names the well as Queen Anne's Wishing Well and notes the moulded hood mentioned by authority 4. At the beginning of the 19th century the well is depicted on an estate map as "The Castle Well" (6). Stukeley, however, writing in 1726 (7) calls this well King Arthur's Well, a name which is taken up by Dymond (8). The well is called Queen Anne's Wishing Well on the OS first edition 25" map (9). |
