Summary : The remains of a medieval chapel, situated on a narrow, level plateau above the valley of the River Tees to the north. The chapel is visible as the lower courses of a single roomed rectangular building, orientated east to west, constructed of sandstone rubble. The chapel has maximum dimensions of 14.5 metres by 7 metres, with walls 0.8m thick standing to a maximum of 1 metre high at the east end. The only apparent entrance is central to the south side, but no dateable features survive. The chapel is associated with the medieval fortified house, settlement and field system of Scargill situated to the west. Scheduled. |
More information : (NZ O5601059) Site of Chapel (NR) (1) "Tradition says a chapel stood here; the foundation is still visible." (2) "Some remains of a supposed chapel, part of the east wall being yet to be seen." (3) The remains of a building orientated E-W and measuring 14.5m x 5.9m externally, with walls 0.8m thick, all of which are at foundation level apart from a short fragment and the east end which stands to a height of 1m. The only apparent entrance is central to the south side, but no dateable features survive. To the north and east are traces of an enclosing wall. Published survey (25") revised. See photograph. (4)
The site was visited by RCHME during the Durham SAMs project 1991. The remains are as described by authority (4), the origin and function of the building seems uncertain however its location near to Scargill Castle suggests it may be related to this medieval settlement. (5) |
