Summary : Railway built in 1863 between Bristol and South Wales utilising the Ferry at New Passage Pier. Following the opening of the Severn Tunnel in 1886, the section between Patchway and New Passage Pier closed and the line was rerouted via the GWR line and the tunnel. |

The line was opened in 1863 with a broad gauge, but worked by the Great Western Railway from 1864. It was converted to standard gauge in 1873. (3-4)
The New Passage and old Pilning stations were closed at the opening of the Severn Tunnel in 1886 and the line finally closed in 1964. The hotel is still in use and the stone landward section of the pier can still be seen.
No trace remains of the New Passage station but the circular turntable with its low masonry well can still be seen. (5)
The railway turntable referred to above (5) is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. The circular turntable is centred at ST 5437 8637 immediately before the New Passage pier. The turntable measures 15m in diameter. The section of railway line from Redwick to New Passage pier was closed in 1.12.1886. The turntable was no longer visible on aerial photographs taken in 1989.
