More information : NZ 06281505 Circular mound seen by R W Blenkinsop 1963. (1) Authority 1 is probably referring to an irregular-shaped turf covered 'mound' part of the natural slope at NZ 06301508. It measures about 10m. diameter with a central hollow probably caused by quarrying. There are no other mounds evident in the surrounding area. No survey action. (2)
NZ 0630 1508. A rectilinear hollow, 6.8m by 3.5m and 0.8m deep, cut into rising ground. Its long sides are flanked by up-cast while its narrow eastern end is open. Scarps immediately above it define a short bank, 0.5m high, which may relate to enclosure scarps further east in the same field (see NZ 01 NE 11). It is just possible, especially given its topographical location, that it is the remnants of a corn drying kiln. Surveyed as part of the EH field investigation of the area around Egglestone Abbey; for further information see the illustrated EH Survey Report - 'The Medieval and Later Landscape at Egglestone Abbey, Teesdale, County Durham'.
