More information : [Area centred ST 487560] Possible grange "behind Lower Farm", Charterhouse. Skinner found remains of a mill, a fishpond and garden walls. (1)
In its foundation charter of 1182 the Carthusian Priory of Witham was granted a large tract of land on Mendip and the associated grange was known as Hydon. (a) The name survives in "Hyden Grange" at ST 525541 a modern house on the site of an earlier farmstead. "Lower Farm", Charterhouse is a 17th c. farmhouse and buildings but there is no evidence of any medieval remains. A third possible site is Manor Farm, Charterhouse on Mendip, another 17th c. building, but in all these the site is completely conjectural. (2) |
