More information : [ST 5023 5609] Camp [GS] (1) In Townfield, Charterhouse, is a rectangular univallate earthwork 95 x 83 yds. externally with surrounding ditch. The bank is wide and low, and the ditch is shallow due to ploughing. (2) A gap on the north-east side may not be original. (4) Some structure seems to have stood within the earthwork. (2-6) Although the earthwork is basically as described, there is now no recognisable ditch. A slightly inturned entrance in the centre of the NE side appears to be original but the gap west of the north corner is almost certainly modern. There are vague internal irregularities, but they are unsurveyable and may possibly be part of the general disturbance, throughout this field, attributed to Roman lead mining (see ST 55 NW 1). Earthwork surveyed at 1:2500. (7) A post-Roman (medieval or post-medieval) enclosure over-lying the Roman earthworks. (8)
